Cone Bags
Use these bags to make a wide variety of fun and easy stocking stuffers,
unique gifts for special occasions or add sparkle and fun to your gift baskets or gift mugs.
Simply fill with your choice of ingredients, tie with colorful ribbons or raffia and tag with instructions.
Really dress them up and make them look special! The difference between a $2.50 and a $3.50
sale is often how pretty the packaging looks. Adding another $.25 in ribbons or lace can make
all the difference.
Some helpful notes:
If you find your cocoa powder is migrating too much, try putting it into a cone bag and secure tightly with
a rubber band. Cut off excess bag. Place inside a second cone bag and fill as before.
I find that using the same color ribbons
for a specific flavor is very helpful when you are looking for a certain flavor at a show. For example: I make Chocolate Creamsicle
Cones with orange, brown and white ribbons. French Vanilla - Caramel Cones with royal blue and purple ribbons.
Some shows require
all food to be prepared in a certified kitchen. For most states this is not a problem, they will allow you to make baked goods and
mixes at home, as long as the products do not require refrigeration (such as meringue pies.) Check with your local health department
to be sure of your regional regulations BEFORE you make up a whole lot of items that you may not be allowed to sell. Oregon is the
only state where I have run into this. Washington is not a problem. Check anyway, just to be sure.
If you need to have a certified
kitchen, no worries! Cone bags and layered gift jars can easily be made up at your local church, school or community center - all
of those places should have a certified kitchen, and can provide a letter of certification if needed. Most will let you come in for
a couple of hours to work on your projects - provided you do not use their supplies and clean up any mess you make.
Take a couple
of friends and make a production line. Within an hour or two, you could make up hundreds of cones and jars. One person to put in cocoa
powder, place the cone in coffee mug (not drinking glasses - they will fall over), slide to the next person. Next person puts in marshmallows,
slides mug along…. etc. Finish all the cocoa cones before switching to cake mixes so you don’t get them mixed up. Remember, you only
need to have your item to the point where you secure the top. You can finish the ribbons and labels at home. (Be sure you keep the
cones or jars in clearly marked boxes or you will forget which flavors you have! Too late? Forgot what flavor that is? Oh No! Never
throw them out - just label them as “Cocoa Mix - Mystery Flavor,” and put everything you can think might possibly be in them on the
ingredient label. Better to have too many items listed than not all of them.
Kitchen funnels make me crazy. Everything gets stuck
in them. I use clean oil funnels from the auto parts store. They have a wider throat and are dishwasher safe. Always clearly label
the ones you use for cooking and the ones you use for bath products. I use a Sharpie pen to be sure there is never a mix up. Why?
Even if you wash the funnels, plastic will pick up the perfume from bath products and can unpleasantly flavor your mixes. Don’t be
shy, buy about 10 of them and have them clean and ready to go! No slowing down production because you only have one funnel! I have
also found the funnels at the local dollar store. They need to be hard plastic, don’t bother with paper ones.

Gourmet Hot Cocoa Cones (makes 4 servings)
3/4 cup Hot Cocoa Mix
1/4 cup French Vanilla Flavored Coffee Creamer (powdered)
3/4 cup Mini
Marshmallows
1 Cone Bag
Ribbons
1 small rubber band
Directions: Pour hot cocoa mix into the bottom of the bag. Tap the bag a few times
to help settle the cocoa mix. Set the cone in a coffee cup to help hold it up so it will be easier to fill. Add half of the marshmallows
and gently push down to help keep the cocoa in the bottom of the bag. This also adds a pretty color contrast. Next, add the flavored
coffee creamer. Tap the bag to settle the coffee creamer. Add the rest of the marshmallows. Press down gently, but firmly. Quickly
secure with the small rubber band. Try to get the cone as tight as possible around the cocoa mix so nothing will move around while
you are working with the cone. Next, add ribbons to the top and a tag with your contact information (in case they want to order more!),
expiration date (about 6-3 months out), ingredients, and these simple directions: Pour contents of cone into 4 mugs. Add hot
water or hot milk. Stir and enjoy!
